Tucked away in Carlton North is one of the cutest parks in Melbourne. Curtain Square is shadowed by huge leafy trees, covered with lush green grass and surrounded by gorgeous Carlton real estate. There’s play equipment, artwork, gazebos, tons of parking and even a basketball ring. To top it all off, the park also comes complete with a fully-fenced off-leash dog area.
The dog park has all your standard features. There’s a dog water bowl, sturdy fences, doggy bags, park benches, and magnetic gates that close behind you. Unlike the rest of the park, the dog off leash area is a something of a dust bowl. But Carlton is known for its dog-loving residents so it’s easy to imagine that the park gets a LOT of puppy action during the week. If you’re looking to visit when the place is less busy, we went at 8am on a Sunday and had the dog park all to ourselves. Before 8am, the Council requires quiet play.
One of the best things about the Curtain Square dog park is that it’s opposite a bunch of delicious eateries on Rathdowne St including Thirty Eight Chairs and the Local Burger Co. You can tire out the puppy before heading for some quality Melbourne grub or grab some take out and enjoy it in the park (if your pup doesn’t steal it first). There’s also the Rathdowne Village Delicatessen if a picnic is more to your fancy.
Curtain Square gets the thumbs up from us. As far as dog parks go, it’s a decent size, especially in the inner city. Next time you’re looking for a great food + dog park combo, Curtain Square is the place to go.
