Dumbo in West Footscray has been on my brunch ‘to do’ list for some time. It’s in the middle of suburban West Footscray next to a school on a quiet street and completely unassuming. Despite being off the grid, the place has become incredibly popular and Footscray locals have been going absolutely crazy bananas about it.
It’s easy to see why. The cafe is beautifully designed. It’s Scandinavian meets Bauhaus. Simple. Elegant. And their sense of style carries through everything they do from the interior design through to the menu and their ingredients.
Unlike a lot of places around Melbourne, Dumbo doesn’t try to pretend that ostentatious plating and unrecognisable ingredients can make up for poor flavours. Rather, they’ve taken simple beautiful dishes and done them extremely well.
The menu is full of classics like Eggs Benedict and Bircher, refashioned into modern seasonal creations. I cannot even begin to explain how hard it was to choose! After much debate, we had the Chilli Scrambled Eggs on sourdough and the Sautéed Mushrooms with poached eggs and polenta on sourdough. And they were scrumptious. In fact, the words “some of the best scrambled eggs I’ve ever had in my life” may have been used. Yes, this is the kind of place where you can get excited about scrambled eggs!
For the pups, Dumbo has plenty of outdoor seating along the road as well as in their courtyard. The tables along the road are quite small so there isn’t anywhere for your dog to hide or lie down except in the walkway. However, the courtyard has more space, larger tables and a shade structure to shelter from the summer heat. Probably not enough to protect you and your dog from any heavy rain, but great for a summer’s day.
We weren’t offered a water bowl for our dog but the staff were super friendly and happy to assist. Put it this way, she certainly still got her fair share of cuddles and attention! The staff were also great with kids and this seems like the kind of place that would also be a winner with the mums and bubs crowd. There is free street parking, high chairs and a kids menu too.
I suspect Dumbo wasn’t designed specifically for dog owners but their food was so good and the staff were so accommodating and cheerful that it certainly didn’t impact our experience. Make sure to stop by on a sunny day.
