The best dog-friendly outdoor cinemas this summer

Movie lovers, brace yourself! Outdoor cinemas and drive-ins are popping up all over town this summer and this year most of them will allow your doggo to come along too. Yes, no matter whether you’re in South Yarra, Coburg or Dandenong, you’ll be able to catch all the season’s biggest blockbusters with your four-legged friend by your side. 

Here are our top 5 dog-friendly outdoor cinemas to enjoy with your pup: 

1. The Moonlight Cinema
Central Lawn, Royal Botanic Gardens, South Yarra

The Moonlight series at the Royal Botanic Gardens is the crème de la crème  of outdoor cinemas this summer. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on leash in all sections of the cinema including the Connoisseur Lounge and Gold Grass. Have food and drinks delivered straight to your bean bag while you lie back with your pup and watch the big screen. The cinema runs through to April so there’s sure to something playing that will tickle your fancy.

2. Sunset Cinema at Gasworks Park
21 Graham Street, Albert Park

The Sunset Cinema will light up Gasworks Park for three weeks from 27 December. While your pup won’t be able to head into the Peugeot Lawn Lounge area, dogs are permitted on leash in general admission areas. Grab your mates and bring along a picnic blanket to enjoy all the biggest movies of the year. The event is licensed with drinks available to purchase at the MadFish Bar. There will even be a snack shop serving popcorn, lollies and *drum roll* doggy treats!

3. Cameo Outdoor Cinema
1628 Burwood Highway, Belgrave

The Cameo Outdoor Cinema in Belgrave is opening its doors to your on leash pets for select screenings throughout December and January. Relax in one of their deck chairs with your pup and kids while you enjoy Coco (29 December), Paddington 2 (30 December) or the Lion King (17 January). Make sure to grab tickets for the Coco screening and help support the amazing charitable work of No Hairs Ark. You’ll even be able to buy doggy treats from our friends at Bark and Bites Cafe.

4. Coburg Drive in
155 Newlands Road, Coburg

Relive the 80s at the Village Drive In at Coburg. The cinema welcomes dogs to every session every day of the year. Pop open the boot and pull out some deck chairs or embrace the serenity inside your own car. The cinema features a massive 33m-wide modern screen where you pick up sound via your car or personal FM stereo. Eat in their retro style diner with big outdoor tables perfect for pups or order via the Village app and have your food delivered straight to your window.

5. Lunar Drive in Dandenong
115 South Gippsland Highway, Dandenong

The largest drive-in theatre in Australia, the Lunar in Dandenong is consistently packed night after night.  Lounge on the lawn, lie in the back of your ute or watch from the comfort of the driver’s seat. With no tickets sold in advance, it’s a great choice for those who don’t like to plan ahead. Dogs are welcome on lead so it’s a great options for families with pups. They also have absolute bargain prices with a carload (up to 7 people wearing seat belts) costing only $30 or $25 Monday-Wednesday.
