If you’re heading to Port Melbourne Dog Beach, rest assured you won’t be short of nearby dog-friendly dining options. One of our favourite stops for a filling meal is Third Wave Cafe. Just one block from the beach, Third Wave offers plentiful al fresco seating where you and your pup can enjoy a bite for breakfast, lunch or dinner seven days a week. It’s famous for its huge serves of southern bbq meats, burgers, shakes and decadent desserts.
While there are vegetarian options, Third Wave’s dining options are certainly designed more toward the meat-loving crowd. Lunch and dinners are all about American-style brisket, ribs and decadent juicy burgers. Add to that boozy milkshakes, cocktails and an assortment of tasty sides (mac and cheese? Yes please!) and we can guarantee no one will go home hungry. In comparison, breakfasts are lighter on the meat, featuring a more traditional Australian menu of pancakes, eggs florentine and breakfast paninis.
The service can be slow at times but the staff are exceptionally friendly towards both humans and our four-legged friends. In summer, you won’t need to worry about overheating with a shade-cloth covering the paved courtyard, umbrellas and trees along the sidewalk, and hot pink doggy waterbowls on hand for hydration. What’s more, the cafe also experiences less car and pedestrian traffic than the cafes along Bay Street, making it a more suitable choice for jumpy pups.
With tasty food, abundant al fresco seating and dogs a plenty it’s easy to see why this place draws a crowd. Just keep in mind that weekends are consistently busy so call ahead and book a table.
