South Melbournites are spoiled for choice when it comes to cafes with al fresco dining. While many welcome dogs, Magic on Ferrars Street is one of the few that can truly accommodate all breeds and sizes. From a gaggle of toy poodles to your uncle’s grumpy saint bernard, Magic has space, space and then some. Add to that a scrumptious menu, trendy decor and affable staff, and it is easy to see why local dog owners keep coming back for more.
Magic’s menu has all your classic Melbourne favourites and presents them beautifully. Avocado smash, corn and zucchini fritters, and chilli scrambled eggs all grace the breakfast list. While most of their menu is savoury, particularly their lunch menu which features fancy burgers, pasta and nutritious salads, sweet tooths still have plenty to be excited about. Treat yourself to their unique Coconut porridge topped with berries, mixed nut crumble and whipped peanut butter mousse, or dive into Dr Marty’s Crumpets with seasonal berries, whipped ricotta and honeycomb that melts in your mouth.
All of this amazing food is complemented by their hip outdoor space. Unlike most inner-city cafes, Magic has opted for comfort over numbers. Outdoor seating stretches around the building with ample room for pups, prams and large groups. Their big black and white umbrellas adorn upcycled milk-crate tables, and dog water bowls sit under leafy trees. Although some pups may be bothered by the traffic along Ferrars Street, the owners have done their best to set tables back from the road and small planter beds add extra protection for tables along Bank Street.
Overall, Magic is relaxed, chic, tasty and genuinely dog-friendly. A much-appreciated gem for inner-city dog owners.
